Early water-cooled 911's (MY '99-'01) are starting to drop in value to affordable levels. There have been some problems with recent watercooled Porsche engines (Boxster & 996), that have required considerable attention, even as far as total replacement. A PPI is definitely a must on any Porsche. I suspect that long term, late air-cooled cars (esp. '95-'98 993) will be a vastly better bet than early water-cooled 996s, in terms of maintenance and especially depreciation. Very low mileage 993s are selling for basically whatever they sold new for. As Johnny del said, the 996 was too easily confused with the Boxster. Just like there are people who won't have a SAAB that isn't a two-stroke, there will be people who won't have a Porsche that isn't air cooled. Of course the newer Porsches will be *better* cars than the older ones. They won't be as involving to drive as their predecessors, they will be heavier, faster, more comfortable and more sophisitcated. One important design benefit that the air-cooled cars have is that the major mechanicah components were designed by people with plenty of margin for error in the strength of components. Newer models are designed with a lot of computer assistance and calculations are much more precise. This means that they probably won't cope with extensive tuning in the way that the cars of old did.
