No argument there. My original point was that people/"enthusiast" tend to get snobby about cars they know little about based on jaded car mags, small sample statistics ("My friend's ___ was a POS so they all are!"), and uneducated biases.

If you look at the quality/reliability record of cars today and did your own math, you'd see that the Hyundai is practically as good as a Honda. The differences are miniscule. That's why I don't even look at that fascet when choosing cars today - I JUST look at the 'fun stuff.'

Yeah, the S2K requires kamikaze driving techniques, which annoy me also, but then again, I haven't had the chance to drive one either. I sometimes think the car mags are just jaded. Yeah, they feel undertorqued after you've gotten out of a 360 Modena! My quip with them is actually: 1) Stupid IP cluster (digital crap) and 2) price - I can't justify the change they want... seems ridiculous that any car with that little actual substance can cost THAT much (but then half of the market fits this bill, to me!).

You'll NEVER sell me on 'making a Miata look masculine.' My brother tried for months. Yeah, the chassis is godsend, BUT there ain't no gettin' 'round dem looks! I've checked out every wheel and body work kit you can think of... they just end up looking like that Vette from "Corvette Summer" with Luke Skywalker (don't know if you're old enough to remember that painful movie).

While I like doing work on my own car, something as big as adding a turbo does not sound fun and I KNOW the cost for somebody to install ain't cheap. That and I KNOW most of the poor ECU mods or lack of mods screws up the mileage bad. My lil' bro put a Jackson blower in his Civic and got a whole 20mpg on the highway - wooohoooo! NOT! Your thinking that it will be cheap predicated on the purchase of a used car won't fly with me - I don't trust ANYONE. No way I'm buying a used car... except maybe Mother Terresa, but she's dead now.

My fingers are crossed on the Pontiac Solstice - lightly turbo'd, small fun chassis, RWD, 2 seats, and hopefully $20k. I strongly feel the reason cars like the Miata and MR2 don't sell well is because of their ridiculous prices. Fun driving alone can't justify $5k worth over most four bangers.
