I lived in Walla Walla for 7 years while getting an edumacation :) and working after graduation. It's basically a farm town, but one with three colleges in it, so there's a surprisingly good arts and culture scene. About 25-30,000 population. The downtown got decimated when the crappy mall was built just to the west of the city, but it has been upgrading itself over the years and is now pretty nice. There's a great coffee house/deli named Merchants on the main drag which is way cool. (Alas, Starbucks moved in across the street not too long ago, so Walla Walla is on its way to looking just like everywhere else.) There are several nice restaurants, a brew pub, a great burger and shake place called the IceBurg. I have no idea if there's a Saab mechanic there, but I would be very surprised if there was. It's an old city, with a ton of beautiful old homes. There are wonderful parks and lots of tree-lined streets, making the city kind of an oasis. Which is good, 'cause the surrounding country is nothing but wheat fields, onion fields, and some nice little vineyards! If you're a cyclist, it's a great place to ride your bike with lots of paved country roads and very little traffic. Great for Saab driving, too! The climate is pretty agreeable. It gets lots of sun in the summer, with many days in the 90s, but the humidity is low, so it's bearable. Winters are cold, but not a lot of snow. The city is in a valley, so a lot of foggy days during the winter months.

Still, it's a small town. For any major shopping or entertainment excursions, you'll want to fire up the Saab and hit the road. The closest metro areas are the Tri-Cities (Richland, Pasco, Kennewick) which is an hour west, and Spokane, 2 hours north. Portland (my hometown) totally rocks, but it's 3.5 hours west. On your way to Portland, you'll take I-84 which runs through the Columbia River Gorge, one of the most beautiful places on earth...once you get away from the Interstate. Lots of waterfalls, tons of hiking trails. The Blue Mountains are just to the east, and the Eagle Cap Wilderness beyond that, for other outdoor options.

Hope this helps.

Dan
