I was raised in a Ford family... pretty traditional US stuff. Back in '75 I got first exposure to a Saab; a very knowledgeable salesman gave me a close up tour of a loaded '76 Saab 99. At first I was put off by the odd styling. After 15 minutes I was enthralled by the apparent build quality, and mostly by the outside-the-box engineering/design. The door bottoms wrapped under the rocker panels so when you get in your pants touch clean surfaces for crying out loud! It was obvious Saab was about producing putting great ideas into production & building high quality, sensible cars without concern for how-its-been-done-before. I LOVED THAT!
My first Saab was an '86 900S. I still think there's something very special about the C900. Great engineering produced a car that's amazingly structurally solid and roomy for the weight. And the C900 look will always be a classic. Currently I believe Saab is building a high quality car, but sadly has become slave to the masses in the area of styling and bells/whistles. (Ben & Jerry's ice cream is still good stuff, but an intangeable essence was lost when the sold out.)
