Have you ever looked under the hood of a Subaru? They are longitudinal -always have been. The only way that AWD system can work is in that position due to the positioning of the front and center differentials. Changing that would require a complete rework of the front half of the system, and that point they'd be better off with someone else's AWD - one designed for transverse mount. Take a close look at the systems labelled "quattro" by Audi - there are several unique and unrelated variations of "quattro," some designed for longitudinal and some designed for transverse. *All* Subaru's systems are designed for the former.
If they're going to go this route, I'd just assume see Alfa's Viscomatic in a Saab... that would be a great match!
