You have reached out and ask for help, and believe me there are lots of us who have been exactly where you are today. I drank regularly for 23 years and got drunk at every opportunity, but now I have been totally sober since October 28, 1989. I toughed it out for the first three weeks, then went to AA at the urging of a friend. You have to sort out some of the crap that you hear there, but pay attention to the important things like "it will get easier". I didn't believe that at first, but every time I wanted to drink I told myself that I would never know if it was true if I gave in. Mark the days off your calendar, one by one. Before long you will find that you can wait for a weeks before marking them off, then a month. Believe me, it does get easier but you have to bear down, get really stubborn, and flat refuse to give in to the urge - no matter what! I think the thing that helped me the most was this: when you think you miss the booze, take a step back and remember it instead.
Best of luck to you, man, you can do it if I did it! I can honestly tell you that I really didn't think that I had what it takes to quit, but I found that I did. Knowing that I overcame that addiction I tackled another even tougher one: smoking. I smoked for 31 years but quit (with the help of the patch) almost 9 years ago.
Like others have said, take it one day at a time, and sometimes one hour or even one minute at a time. Grit your teeth and hang onto to something until your knuckles turn white, but just don't give in - EVER!!!! Even when shit happens, let it go.
Let us hear how you are doing. I'm pulling for you, and I know lots of other readers on this BB are too.
