All you Libertarians and other assorted anti-goverment types on the board are gonna love this. The Swedish version of the USDOT recently completed a pilot project that tested the feasibility and public response to a system that used GPS technology to provide resistance in a vehicle's accelerator when going through certain areas, such as school zones and other high-risk areas. The system can be overridden - just push a bit harder than normal on the gas pedal. But the idea is that it keeps you driving at a lower speed in the areas that are higher risk for a collision.
Of course, it's another example of "Big Brother" taking over our beloved cars. But, in a way, I like this system. As long as it's not used on highways, it makes sense as a way to keep speeds down in higher density neighborhoods. It doesn't require police to set up speed traps, nor does it slow down emergency vehicles like speed bumps do. Check out the project website...I'd be interested to hear opinions from y'all. Oh yeah, there are a number of pics of Saabs in the materials...duh!
Jorgen Trued: Do you have any additional information on this project?
Peace,
Dan
