Chris - I use a 3000 psi 3 gal/minute 5 bhp gas pressure washer, set to about 1/2 max pressure, as a pre-washer only. I believe there is no way a pressure washer will get your car clean using only water, unless it is just covered with dust. If there is an oily road film on the paint, forget it, unless you use a harsh (paint damaging) concentrated detergent with the washer.
I live on a gravel road, so I tend to get lots of grit on my black Aero Wagon, especially if it is rainy. I rinse off the grit using the pressure washer, then wash the car normally with a sheepskin mitt and car wash solution. The pre-rinse eliminates almost 100% of the scratching that normally occurs when you hand wash a gritty car. After the hand wash, there is almost no grit lying in the bottom of the bucket.
If you own your home, I suggest you purchase a unit with a similar (or higher) rating to mine. It is so useful for cleaning concrete, or the roof, or whatever. You need a decent flow rate for jobs like this, that a small electric washer simply cannot provide. Mine (with a Honda engine) was about US$600 at Home Depot. The Honda is a little more cash than a B&S, but it is much more sophisticated and satisfying to use. Pick a horizontal model - the vertical ones are a PITA to use because the attachment points for the hoses are underneath. If you rent your home, then a small electric would probably be more suitable. But don't expect any pressure washer to fully clean your car.
Whichever unit you buy, remember to NOT get the nozzle too close to the paint. I try not to get in closer than 18 inches or so. You can damage the finish, loosen body trim and inject water into places that were never intended to get wet. Be careful.
IMHO, of course.
