with all (except c-reactive protein) in the normal range (Total cholesterol of 153; ldl of 92; triglycerides of 114; HDL of 38, total/HDL of 4.0), and I eat a low carb diet (most of my calories come from fat). On high carb, low fat, my total cholesterol was about the same but my HDL was even lower.
I have nothing against vegetarians, but I'm borderline diabetic. I simply cannot eat pasta, rice, and many fruits. These spike my blood sugar too much.
If you don't have insulin resistance, then vegetarianism is fine; if, like me, you have to hold onto something when you eat a high carb meal because of the head spin caused by blood sugar, then low carb is a viable alternative.
Just another opinion from someone with a different genetic makeup.
Bob
PS -- My grandfather smoked for at least 40 years; he was an alcholic for at least 20-30 years; ate high fat and high sugar; and he's into his 90s and totally non-senile. Genetics plays a much larger role than people would have you believe.
