Well, VW is recalling nearly 850,000 cars!!!
EVERY coilpack, in all 2001/2002/early 2003 1.8T engines, has the ability to fail at any moment. This includs all New Beetles/Jettas/Golfs/Passats and Audi A4's with this engine. Other engines involved are the 2.8L V6 (not the VR6), and the new W8.
The 2.0L, VR6, and TDI are unaffected. Talk about a blow to the company. First, they post a 17% drop in sales for January. this, since they have a product line that was the envy of the industry, and now has begun to languish as competitors were improved. this is what got VW in trouble last time, too. Now, their mighty 1.8T - once again a "Wards 10 Best engine" has fallen. And fallen hard.
You know what gets me, though: the coilpacks have been issues for 2 years now, and they left it to rear its ugly head. Why did they wait so long?
Thankfully, we replaced our 99 Passat V6 not with a Passat 1.8T or Passat W8. But a 9-5.
