SAAB in the news, Wall St Journal article

Feb 7 issue of Wall Street Journal weekend section tested 9 "luxury lite" sedans and commented on the trend of luxury manufacturers going down market with stripped down vehicles.
9-3 Linear Summary: "Saab tries to get back into bargain-luxury with a redesign (good-bye hatchback) and help from the parent company GM (it shares parts with Opels, Chevys). Standard leather seats and OnStar communications are nice, but dealers say it needs dicounts to sell."
also, "The strategy? Ditch its trademark hatchback look in favor of a traditional sedan profile. In other words, make it look like BMWs, too."
Focus of article seemed to be getting a luxury name with leather seats and an automatic, which Saab accomplishes for the price. Mercedes and BMW offer pleather or cloth. I enjoyed the reference to "hoping to extend sales beyond pipe-smoking college professors"; depends whats in the pipe, eh?
A fair article, negative (and justified) comments on black plastic dominating the dash, and comments on uneven power (not known to me). When I saw the 9-3s leather seats I was not impressed, they look like pigskin, that pebbled football leather, rather than the old smooth Elmo cowhides, but they didn't comment on that.
For what its worth.............
