Look. Used cars these days have both horrible trade in value and horrible second party resale. Car technology may be moving faster ahead over the next ten years so the old need to simply keep that pricey Euro car til it hits the 200k mark seems a little outdated. Also, high maitenance costs, when coupled with the truly horrible resale available for all cars, including supposed high resale ones, just doesn't seem to make sense anymore. 'Why buy a car?' is starting to be my thinking. (I have a masters in Economics, though am still a little stumped on the lease/buy question)
I leased my 02' 9-5 Linear with premium package with no money down for $440 per month over 4 years and 15k miles p/y. Rediculously cheap. Remember, nothing down beyond refundable items. In four years, after the car is replaced with a new 9-5 model (or I chose some other Saab, or, gasp, even a BMW 5) I get another car. Again, no maitenance nightmares of long ownership, no dealing with trade-ins, and the fun of a new car--but at a reasonable length of time, ie every four years. This is quick turnover, but it is not in-your-face quick, if you know what I mean. And, it's damn affordable. Eventually, as I get a lot older (I'm 31 now) maybe I find some big BMW 7 that I just want to keep and keep and keep for my retirement, where, hopefully, I'm on a beach somewhere for rest and relaxation and the ridiculously low mile BMW 7 or whatever sits back in the cold Chicago garage and doesn't cause too many problems. It just gets taken out an a stately ride if you know what I mean. Hey, I look forward to the good life.
Anyway, see what I mean? With the incentives available on new cars why buy used is the current thinking--and did you know that the AVERAGE new incentive on a Saab, which is the highest incentives in the industry according to the NYTimes, is $6,000. That is $6,000 off the price you set with the dealer in order to lease a new 9-5 at. Another person on this board just was chosing between buying his old 9-3 or leasing a new one. This board is not full of a lot of flashy people, but almost everyone seemed to recommend him to lease the new 9-3SS rather than buy his old one due to the current incentives.
