"Believe it or not, Saab is planning a small car based on the Subaru Impreza."
"The company, whose sales have hovered around 125,000 a year for the past decade, desperately needs new models and is looking at a number of options, based on the mechanicals of GM's alliance partners. Saab believes a small hatcback, to rival the Audi A3, offers the best solution."
"Saab's Antony Lo, head of exterior design, has been working in Japan on the design of the 9-1, which could, according to Saab sources, be launched as early as 2005. Saab admits that while the Subaru boxer turbo engine - which would be retained - offers the advantage of a low bonnet line, such packaging would inevitably mean rejecting a diesel engine - essential in Europe, where more than 50 percent of A3s are diesels."
"Sales reaction to the new 9-3 has been muted and, although the convertible version arrives later this year, Saab now acknowledges there's little chance of reaching the 200,000 sales goal, even with the expanded 9-3 and existing 9-5 ranges."
"Saab cancelled a planned 4WD after disappointing results in US research clinics."
