Join the misery. Insurance costs of nearly all types are going up substantially. Reasons given by the insurance industry are:
1) Large claims
2) Rotten economy/investment markets

Since the insurance companies are making much less money with their investments since the market tanked 3 years ago, they are increasing premiums to cover costs.

Only way out may be to get multiple quotes and switch insurers. Some agencies/companies are prone to "low balling" premiums to new clients in order to gain additional business. Take advantage of this and keep checking prices everytime your policy comes up for renewal. A $200 per year difference is not uncommon.

Premiums in Michigan are also determined partially by the claim history within different geographic areas called territories. Each insurance company uses their own boundaries for these territories. A different company may place your home adddress within a territory with a lower claim history, resulting in a lower premium to you.
