There was a study about this a year or two ago. One of the effects of sitting up higher when you're driving is that your sense of how fast you're going gets affected. Think about being in an airplane. If there's no clouds in the sky, you don't actually have any visual cues that you're moving that fast. That's because the ground below you doens't look to be moving very fast. Granted being an extra 3' up in an SUV ain't nowhere close to being in a plane, but the effect is still there. Obviously this is no excuse for piss poor driving.
