We actually started covering this engine in the mid '90s, when the GM Corporate Board approved the development of a new "state of the art" 4 cylinder engine to replace most, if not all, of the dozen or so different designs. A couple of years ago we did an in depth analysis into the engine design, showing the very strong Saab influence - familiar Saab design features never before seen in a GM motor. Pay credit where it's due, we also discussed design features common to GM motors (roller valve tappets - for better economy and less stress on those pesky timing chains; lost foam casting, for precise, intricate aluminum castings) and other design innovations (streamlined crank counterbalance weights, shrouded reverse curve water pump impeller). We concluded that the engine was substantially a Saab design, improved to an extent that only a large company's deep development pockets, large volume use, and impressive manufacturing technology could make possible. Remember, the current iron block engine took 35 years of development - from the start of 99 engine development by Ricardo Engineering until the 1998, when the 9-3 and 9-5 versions came out. The new engine, straight out of the box, produces more power at lower boost levels and with better economy.
