the vineyard may still be kinda cool that early. also, don't be surprised if there are more people than you might expect. what with the Kennedys & Jackie O, Bill Clinton's regular visits for two terms, and any of a number of other publicity generators for the island that have kept it in the media of late, plenty of people are heading out there.
anyway, go to my friend's restaurant, the Park St. Bistro, in Oak Bluffs :-)
with kids, they'll probably be most psyched about hanging out in Oak Bluffs; it's the funkiest township & has lots of kids, video game arcades, etc.
also drive out to the end of the island, Gay Head (yes, it's a, um, different name, given way prior to the immediate meaning you're probably reading into it right now...); beautiful clay bluffs to look at and one big tourist trap to try to take yer $$.
Menemsha, small fishing village, is also nice, quaint. The clam chowder at the Homeport there is 2nd to none. Menemsha has a nice little beach, too.
In Vinyid Haven, if you feel like it, check out the now infamous Black Dog bakery. it ain't what it used to be, but what is these days? (boy, if only our country's biggest concern was finding a, um, smoking gun, er, cigar...)
In Edgartown, bring your pink & green. the quintessential preppy summer spot (well, MVY is already that, but Edgartown is more so), it also has the most formal feel to it of the townships. closest, imho, to Nantucket.
strongly advise against travel via moped - very dangerous and every car on the island driven by a local will harbor a latent fantasy of running your loud, slow carcass off the road. and those who are from off island will treat you with no respect also. if you drive, don't speed - cops will always be happy to commemorate the occasion. if you drive @ night, be aware of SKUNKS! They are everywhere, have no natural enemies, and are only killed off by cars. Mmmmm, yummy skunk smell...
last, if you're going out to dinner & want to enjoy beer/wine with your meal, note that Oak Bluffs & Edgartown are the only towns selling booze; others are "dry," so BYOB to the restaurant.
