NHSTA tests - what do these really mean?

I was surfing crash test data, and I'm very curious. There are tons of light, tin can japanese and american cars that have 5 star frontal impact ratings, and 4 or 5 start side impact ratings. Cars like the honda accord, toyota camry, some acuras, honda crv. Come on! Are these cars really as safe as a saab or a volvo? None of these cars give you that tank or bank vault like feel that we love in our saabs. How does the strength of the body/frame figure into these tests? I don't care if you have 50 airbags. If you have a flimsy frame/body, what good will the airbags do when your car is crushed?
