b/c the service manager at my Saab-only dealer told me it did not make any difference at all if I went ahead and just followed the new guidelines on my 02' 9-5 Linear and just use the 87. He suggested one in every four times I use a higher grade, but he said he didn't even think this was really necessary. Frankly, I drive as fast as possible on the freeways, though since I'm in Chicago really don't get much more than 90-95 mph b/c there is always some traffic that comes out of somewhere around here, but anyway whether I use 87 or higher I can't tell any difference in performance or even gas consumption.
With my second Saab, a 97' 900S convertible, I do go ahead and follow the Saab guidlines and use the higher grade, but, I try to drive this car as little as possible. It has become more of a nostalgia car than one I use a lot. It also seems prone to problems my 9-5 could never even dream of. Still, I love my stupid pain in the butt little Saab convertible.
