We were foster parents for a year. Our foster child was caught stealing ice cream from the elementary school cafeteria. As punishment we cancelled a trip to an amusement park planned for the weekend. Our social worker's response was "Don't you think that's a bit harsh?"
It seems that dicipline is a dirty word these days. In the foster care training we went through we were told to negotiate with the child. How does one "negotiate" with an 8 year old throwing a tantrum? Too many parents today buy into this psychobabble. Problems at school are never the child's fault.
I was certainly no angel when I was a kid but I knew that there were consequences for my actions. Today, many of those consequences would be considered child abuse. Kids act the way they do because they know nothing will really happen to them because of their actions.
