Been there, done that, remember the back pain. The current Taurus/Sable are horrible cars. Squishy seats, sloppy steering, lousy brakes. I used to rent Tauruses a lot. Some of the pre-2000 Taurus models had OK seats, and could actually be an OK rental IMHO, but the 2000 and later cars are a POS. I've refused them at the rental counter. The 97 to 99 models were great snow cars, though. Drove one 6 hrs in a blizzard from NYC to NH and it was about as good as a Saab, even in CT where they don't know how to plow, and with regular tires.
I've found the Olds Intrigue (before GM killed them off) was a decent rental, even for long runs. I did a Chicago to Buffalo to home (NH) run in one of those, and another NYC-Ottawa-NH in another and it was a comfortable, enjoyable car. Not a Saab, but not bad either.
My best rental was a 1999 9-5 from Budget out of Phoenix.
