I just completed a stone veneer for an interior basement bar at a friend of a friends house (never tell people you used to do stone masonry). We used to use DILUTED (maybe a cup/5 gal - read the instructions!!)muriatic acid to clean mortar stains off of the faces of stone. I told the guy to go get some and he came back with a spray bottle of some stone/mortar cleanser. I scoffed at it thinking that if it didn't come with an MSDS sheet, it can't be good for anything.
Well, the guy took to scrubbing the stone with the stuff (poor bastard also scrubbed off all the lichen (he called it dirt) that was on the stones - why buy field stone?) and, by golly, it actually came out pretty clean. I think he got it at Home Depot - said they didn't have the real stuff. May be worth trying. I guess it's pre-diluted muriatic acid, but it didn't say on the bottle.
