I have just come back from the annual car show here in Vancouver and if the Saab SUV is anywhere near as good as the Volvo its a sure-fire winner! The Volvo OOOZES quality and at CAD61000 for the XC90 T6 its a bargain compared to the X5 and others I saw. The new VW Tuareg was there too, not at all impressed, it had a nasty interior (along with all VWs there) and the wheel wells are HUGE compared to the wheels which looked stupid. The Porsche Cayenne didnt impress me either, looks almost exactly like the VW but costs WAY more. The LR Range Rover was a beauty but was CAD43000 MORE than the Volvo. There was also some Chevy SUV project set for release in 2005 that looked like it could be worked into something resembling a Saab, I just wish I could remember what it was called. It looks like it shares the same platform as the Caddie SRX they had next too it. If Saab were to badge engineer some crappy SUV they would be doing th Saab name a HUGE dis-service.
The Saab stand had a lot of people drooling over a beautiful black 9-3 Vector which was along side a Graphite Green 9-5, Steel Grey 9-3 Linear and black 9-3 Convertible. I mistook the 9-5 for the 9-3SS at first and didnt figure it out until I was sat inside looking at the dash thinking, the quality is better than the 9-3SS I drove last November, how embarassing was that!!! Overall I must say I wasnt overly impressed with the quality of the showcars, they definitely "sounded a bit GM" when you gave the doors a good shove. The plastics in the new 9-3SS were a little better than the 9-3SS I drove in November last year but still not upto the standards set by Audi, BM and even Volvo. I really like the metal inserts on the Vector interior but Id avoid the parchment leather interior like the plague, its gets filthy very quickly! Isnt it about time Saab had better colours for the interiors, the beige and grey are so dull!!!
So what disappointed me most about the show, all of the MB cars which are now no more that tarted up Dodges!!! I dont know where they are getting interior plastics but they need to smarten up, big time. A Kia Rio on the stand nextdoor had plastics just as good as a base C-Class and there is not excuse for cheap plastics on a CAD125000 SL which looks FANTASTIC until you sit in it! Volvo impressed me, as mentioned before the SUV was great, the S60 T5 is a real looker and the V70 AWD is a nice looker too with lots of thoughful touches and the quality was every bit as good as a BM if not quite to Audi standards. My fave car in the show, a STUNNING Lamboughini Murceilago in this gorgeous metallic blue, talk about SEXY! WOW!
