Hi,
Due to less hydro-dynamic drag of a lower viscosity oil, fuel
economy of an automobile which is driven according to the shift points
as pointed out by the universally hated "shift-up" lights will improve
with xW-20 weight oil versus a higher viscosity oil.
This is the same reason why we're asked to put xW-30 oils in our Saabs,
even though neither the 5W-30 synthetic blend nor the 0W-30 fully
synthetic meet ACEA A3/B3 as specified in our owner's manuals. If we
use xW-40 oils which meet ACEA A3/B3, ideal fuel economy according to
grand-ma driving style dictated by shift-up light will decrease.
This does _not_ mean that with a proper oil fuel economy of _your_
Saab will go down. In fact your fuel economy may stay the same or
maybe even increase because the oil is more likely to stay in rod
bearings and provide proper hydrodynamic lubrication.
By the way, CAFE stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy.
thanks
Jae
