Way off topic, but I had a funny run-in with corporate America. I got my daily credit card offer in the mail today, this one from American Express for the "Blue Cash" card... along with other benefits, it claims you "earn up to 5% cash back". Naturally, I wanted to know what the "up to" meant... so I read the fine print... which basically reduces the "up to 5% cash back" to "up to 1.5% cash back" except when you shop at certain places. Still, there's that unexplained "up to". I carefully reviewed all three pages of fine print, and nowhere did they begin to explain how the cash back amount is determined. Even more annoying, they did not list their phone number anywhere (and this was clearly intentional, there were three sheets of paper with plenty of room).

So, I looked them up on the web, found a phone number, and called. After beating around the bush for a while, the representative finally admitted that it's up to each merchant how much "cash back" to give, and it could be 0%.

Anyway, here's the kicker... I asked:
"I feel the advertising I received from your company is misleading and I'd like to make a complaint... how would I go about that?"
"I can give you the address for our Customer Relations department"
"May I speak with them instead?"
"No, you have to write to them"
"So, let me get this straight, your Customer Relations department doesn't take phone calls?"
"That's right."

Am I missing something here? Sorry for the rant.
