I spent a year in Japan and it became one of the central experiences of my life. Lifelong friendships and memories. There were many challenges, as you can imagine (language, navigation, food), but well worth it.
I would recommend that you go to the most exotic (read: far away) location you can, because those opportunities may be few and far between once you're out of school. I've always wanted another live-in-country experience, but with the family now it's more difficult.
One thing: make sure that you're going on an exchange that's endorsed by BC. My school (U of Michigan) had no program in Japan when I wanted to go, so I had to transfer out for a year and transfer back in. I got all my credits, but I've heard horror stories about transferring credits internationally.
Good luck and enjoy!
