In 2012 I bought a 2012 Audi A6 3.0L. It was a replacement for my 2007 Saab 9-5 Aero. I loved the Saab and have enjoyed them since 1967. The Audi is several billion dollars of engineering beyond where Saab was when they went bankrupt.
There are several Audi choices that could fit your needs without being prohibitively expensive.
1. A6: the 3.0L is the one I have.... High 50's to low 60's. Very fast and still economical (30-33 mpg on the highway).
2. A6: the 2.0L is a real surprise. It does perform; I used one for 3 days while mine was being serviced and was impressed. Low 40's to 50.
3. A4: the 2.0L is strong and performs very well. It could be a companion to the Lexus and very affordable... Middle 30's to low 40's.
The Audi may be worth a look. They offer a wide variety of strong performing cars that cover pricing starting in the low 30's and up.
My experience at 42K miles has been very good; I'll definitely buy another In a couple of years....if I don't succumb to a Tesla.
