They're good cars and for the price could make a nice driver, but I agree with the others that if you're getting it as a 'fun' car hold out for something more interesting. May as well hold out for a 5-speed, and ideally a 535i. They're definitely our there. The 540i could be an option too (but very rare with the manual until the next generation). My experience with BMWs of the era is that they're not quite as easy to work on as Saabs (some things seem a bit 'over-engineered' to the point of being a pain) but they're very much in the realm of DIY and the part availability will certainly be a pleasant surprise compared to Saab (and typically not as expensive as reputation would lead you to believe).
