The Mazda 3 is definitely a great car for its segment. Ironically the only people that might want to avoid a Mazda are those that need all wheel drive; the 3 at least seems rust pretty badly compared to most cars. And yes, all wheel drive is silly for most folks, though I'm sure the people that suffered through AMC Eagles and tiny tin box Subarus to get it when I was a kid are grateful for today's offerings. As for the crop of tiny SUVs, I think a large number of people these days live where the roads and traffic are so terrible the extra suspension compliance and greater height are appreciated, and their brakes and handling are now similar to quite sporty of a few years ago, so you aren't losing much. Can't say I'd buy one, but I do 'get it' compared to a few years ago when I thought the SUV fad was plain looney toons.
