Interesting cross shop - Audi/Subie. That is actually not too surprising in these parts as Subie is moving up market in price. There is a big difference in feel though between Subies and the better European manufacturers... Did you consider BMW with awd? I am really intrigued by their 4 series and 3 series hatches. Not the X4, but the GT's. A somewhat SAAB-like shape, especially if you can get one with a Turbo.

I've heard lots of great things about the Audi S3... A4 series has grown a fair bit in size, so S3 is kind of in the sweet spot of size that tightens up the handling nicely... I know a number of people who have them and love them but I have not driven one yet.

If you do get a Subie, I would definitely look for one with a stick (and a turbo). The CVT's might be ok, but the older 4 speed autobox offers a terrible driving experience imho. I'm not sure that a WRX necessarily has to reflect badly on one's image... at least if you do not go for the gold wheels and 6" potato shooter exhaust...
