I rent cars pretty often, and funnily enough the only start-stop function I've found to perform in an acceptably transparent manner was in a Buick. If it wasn't for the tach I'm not sure I would have actually noticed. The much more expensive BMWs I've been in with this feature were absolutely terrible, and the Audi only slightly better. As it plays a role in rated fuel economy, my understanding is that it has to be de-actived each time you start the car. Perhaps the dealer can program the car to a different default? Definitely a new-car pet peeve of mine right along with numb electric steering, jerky 'dual clutch' transmissions, and terrible visbility.
