This has actually come up on Saabnet before, and I was suprised by the number of folks who have/had classic Pontiacs.
I had two Firebirds back in high school. A '70 Formula 400 with pretty hot rebuilt motor and a TH350. It had shaved 670 high compression heads, a nasty Lunati bracketmaster cam, an Edelbrock intake, and the usual headers and such. The rest of the car was pretty ugly, but I loved it. Later I had a nearly stock '77 Formula, with a 400 and 4-speed. I had the body redone and painted a nice silver, with WS6 wheels. Surprisingly great handling and a pretty satisfying motor even in near-stock trim. I loved the 4-speed – GM knew how to make (or at least buy) a strong transmission!
This was back when I couldn’t imagine owning anything but a muscle car. Now I own a front wheel drive (I miss power slides), 4-cylinder Saab. Go figure.
