so is "cool" a performance thing, or is it a unique aesthetics thing, or is it an obscurity thing?

To be honest, I feel there are more unique cars on the road nowadays than 20 years ago. The thing is, the unique cars these days are sufficiently popular that we now take them for granted. Eg the Mini or Fiat 500. Those are both unique cars (throwback) done quite well, but very popular. Then there are weird and or ugly compact crossovers like the Cube, Soul, and Juke. For some they might be cool, others ugly.

I think Jag is making some very nice looking cars these days - their sportscar and suv especially look cool for to me for those genres. Alfa is similar in that regard.

Then of course, it seems there are many more large hatches on the road (Tesla S, Panamera, are the more exotic ones, but BMW, Audi, Kia, and others have jumped on this)...
