We've got two E39 5-series (a '98 540i and an '00 M5.)
BMW parts prices are usually (though certainly not always) lower than Saab. A radiator for the 540i is $130 (at the dealer.) You can replace the entire front bumper and undertray assembly on the Bimmers for the cost of a front spoiler for our 9000T.
And, of course, every car model has its own set of weaknesses - just got done changing the electrically-heated thermostat assembly on the 540i this weekend (a $60 part, but a very easy job.)
There's also if anything an even greater depth of expertise on the 'net for BMWs, and an even larger cottage-industry in third-party parts sources, etc. Stuff like Martin Bishop's nav and bluetooth retrofits (http://www.bimmernav.com) and the Stealth One (http://www.jaricdesign.com)
As for 9-5 Aero vs 540i - this depends a lot on the model concerned (the '99-03 M62TU engine has a fair bit more low-end than the earlier M60s and M62s) but what chased me over the wall to BMW was that you eventually (about where our '92 9000T is, in fact) reach a level where FWD simply can't put power to the ground as consistently.
