The M273 engine is a marvel and a beast for its time. 382 naturally aspirated horsepower designed fifteen years ago. Reliable too, especially the later years once M-B got past the balance shaft issue. I had to replace a camshaft magnet (controls variable timing, there are four of them) which was a $29 part and about 29 minutes of my time. Gobs of power and the 7-speed automatic is smooth and you can barely feel the shifts. There is great support on M-B forums like Benzworld and MBWorld.

I'm a fan of modern V8 engines. Each has pluses and minuses. I also have a GM L76 (pushrod in Pontiac G8 with low-center of gravity and pulls like so much fun) and an Infiniti Q45 which revs and sings so nimbly I don't know what else to say!
