Sure it is meant to be a mainstream car, but there's not much wrong with that. I'm planning on renting one on a biz trip as soon as I can. I like the idea of the big roomy sedan with a high view. It will probably be too soft for my liking, but Ford may change that a bit later. I suspect the Five Hundred will become a cop car/taxi/limo, so some suspension upgrades will become avaialble. Once people get used to the idea of it--which may take a while--I think they'll sell a lot of them. Right now though, they have something like a 118 day supply. But that may shift come spring.
I generally like Fords. I have driven several thousand miles in rented Tauruses and Sables and while they are just regular cars, I found them to be fairly decent, even on some nasty conditions, bad roads and at 100+ highway speeds out west. They aren't Saabs, but not bad. They are particularly good snow cars. The trannies are weak points (sound familiar?)
My wife's Exploder has been a good vehicle, despite an early tranny issue at 77K (ahem!), it has been fine for almost 7 yrs and 122K miles. Solid. Change the oil, put in gas. Drive.
