Oil leaks from the front crankshaft seal are common, this should be replaced with the timing belt, as should the camshaft seals and O-rings. Oil pump O-ring leakage is also possible, I believe there is a kit to reseal the oil pump. Leakage from these sources will show up as oil drips from the bottom of the timing cover and be easily identified when the timing cover is off. Leakage from hardened/shrunken valve cover gaskets was very common on many engine models, including the 2.2 SOHC which I think is what you have. No experience with the shift lock, but some cars have a button near the shifter for manual release, check your owner's manual.
