In the size range of the Accord, I like the Legacy GT. I think it fits the bill for character pretty well. Pushing towards $30k, the CTS and G35 are nice cars.

If he can go smaller, the WRX/9-2X are worth a look, and I'm a big fan of the Mazda3 5-door. These three won't have the solid feel of your SPG or of the Legacy, CTS, or G35, though.

The A4 is a good car, and aside from the BMW, it's the closest competitor to the 9-3SS. Maybe a bit lacking in character, but they're trying to fix that by making the nose big and ugly.

The Mini is small, but it's definitely got character.

Sports car fan? I like the new Mustang, but it's not going to be very exclusive. RX-8? Miata (probably not very exclusive)? Solstice?

If he wants something bigger, with the utility of something big, I like the Pacifica. Fuel economy is what you'd expect from a big beast: 17/23. But it's a better option than an SUV.
