The V70 and XC70 are way out of your price range. Also, they are significantly more unreliable than any SAAB. Many very common problems: A/C, catalytic converters, various sensors, etc., etc. Spend any time on a Volvo BB and you will see what I mean. In general, people seem to think Volvos are safer but that is not the case, either.
I like you Subaru idea. Subarus do not hold their value well, so you can definitely find a good one in your price range. They are very reliable and durable cars. Most importantly, they are unique and practical, much like SAABs.
RAV4 -- did you say she needs interior space? The thing is CRAMPED!
CR-V is not bad, but, again, WAY more money. People like their Hondas expensive.
