Yes I'll be the first one to say that Volvo have a slew of cruicial things going wrong and I hate that, just as much as the things we see go wrong on Saabs.
So there you have it, I'm not a Saab complainer only, I complain about all manufacturers not stepping up to the plate and design and build reliable cars.
It's not that car manufacturers are not capable of it but they won't, due to either politics or cheap bean counters.
The ABS computer has been flawed since around 96 on the 850 and it spilled over to the 70 and 80 model. I have spoken to a rebuilder of those units and he says that if they just had choosen a little bit more expensive parts and procedures inside it would never have been a problem.
Before 96 it wasn't really a problem and back then they used an ECU that was similar to the one used in the older 900/9000 model.
The one that fail is very similar to the one that fail in the newer Saab 9-5 whereas Saab have done the unsmart thing to sell the whole hydraulic unit with ECU and on a Volvo you can buy just the ECU and bolt it on in 10 min.
The ABS ECU doesn't leave you stranded though but the ABS function is lost as long as the warning light is on.
The electronic throttle body introduced in 99 is a sorry exuse of how to use new technology BUT!! it is covered under the 7 year/70K emission laws. Not that Volvo dealers easily admits that so many people have paid around $1000.00 for the repair even though it should have been covered under warranty.
Saab have at least installed an old fashioned throttle cable as back up when the electronic throttle fail, so the driver can continue driving without any real problems. Volvo doesn't have that so when the system goes out, you are pretty much stuck.
So you see, when working on several brands you get to notice that one maker build a certain thing bullet proof whereas the other brand, it keep failing a lot and vice versa.
This shows that it is possible to build something reliable but they won't for some or another reason, and that piss me off.
