the official story of the TC, as I recall it (NOT from an enthusiats point, either, but from a dealer)
When Iaccoca bought Maserati, there were complaints about their production numbers. The new LeBaron, developed in 84, was designed as a convertible from the start. So that, along with Maserati's experience with turbo'd engines, brought forth this bastard child, which would fill out Maserati production numbers. However, during the sale of Maserati, MOPAR was forced to buy a number of cars from them during the sale.
It was available with either a 175hp motor with an automatic, or 225 with a 5 speed.
It was an interesting car for the 80's. Very expensive (honestly, a LeBaron Mark Cross was just as nice, but inside and out). And their interior was very nice as well - but kept the poor Chrysler climate control panel, which looked out of place.
So they sold a few thou. I see them around; ther exterior styling is neither sporty nor elegent. As I said, I think the LeBaron looked better.
And I laugh at owners who ask upwards of 20K for them...
