Muffler recomendations for a Honda

My gf has a 94 Civic EX 5sp w/ way under 100k mi. Recently the Muffler went south and it needs to be replaced. OEM Honda is way expensive and she doesn't want the crappy Midas aftermarket special. She has been planning to do some modifications in order to increase the performance of her car. She is seeing the muffler as a good way to start, now that its dead and all. Looked around ebay a bit and found primarily "fart cans" as well as some other things that were priced really cheap but looked like they might be okay. She wants to free up the car's breathing a bit, but she doesn't want a loud car, though throaty would be grand. After she does the muffler she is going to install a cold air intake. She isn't looking to be like one of those suburban kids with tinted windows, fart cans and a whole bunch of asian writing on her car. She is looking to make this a truely enjoyable car to drive.
My question is: what do you recomend for a good muffler, that adds some performance to the car, isn't too loud but sounds good? Mind you she only needs a muffler at this point, so entire systems are out of the question.
