It's a big car therefore I like it.

What I don't like about the new Volvos (99 and up) is that they are crammed full of mini computers (called modules) and all of them communicate over a network system called CAN.

I have seen and read more than I care for about problems with those networking modules and so far it is only a handful of independant Volvo shops that knows how to deal with it (most but not all dealers do).

You can sort of compare it to the 9-3SS that also uses a bunch of those modules.

The engine will live forever. Those aluminum engines (4, 5 or 6 cylinder) that Volvo came out with in 93 seems to be stronger than "steel" (excuse my joke). It needs a new timing belt every 105K miles but that's pretty much it, on top of fluid changes and spark plugs at scheduled intervals.

Try to bargain that they check into and load all the newest software for all modules before you buy it.

Software updates are an ongoing thing whereafter the computer programmer finds out that they made an oops or didn't take into consideration that the car was actually going to be driven on roads.

You can probably tell that I'm not to fond of the new technology that arrived in 99. The reason for it is that it can take a long time to trace down the problem and find out what module that went bad and knocked out the network.
