I have the same dilemma, or at least I will when I purchase my next car since I plan to own it for many many years and will go from one kid to three in that time period.

Minivans generally get better mileage than SUVs, are safer, and have a lot more interior room. you can also get them with AWD (Sienna, for example) so unless you genuinely routinely go on rugged off-roads or tow big loads, get the minivan. Buy the SUV if you want to impress the neighbors or massacre occupants of cars in collisions.

If my job offer comes through (crosses fingers) I'm buying a late-model 9000 since they're the widest-in-the-back Saab.

There must be some other big American cars that would work too, like the neat-o Mercury Marauder or Chrysler Pacifica (sort of a minivan/wagon crossbreed).
