Hard to say. I haven't heard of any anomalities of the head gasket since that basic engine was introduced in 92.
On the other hand, if the engine for some or another reason has ran empty of coolant, anything can happen.
A knock, knock sound doesn't sound like a typical head gasket problem but the dealer is the one that have looked at the car and know way more about that specific situation/engine than a person on the internet.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
