I got no clue specifically about the vette, but clutch disks often DO have 2 sides that are different. Usually it's something like the center hub sticks out further in one direction. But that usually causes something more serious, like it won't ever disengage...
Intermittent grinding sound might be tranny shaft bearing or something like that. Maybe he got too much side load on the tranny shaft while he was aligning/installing the tranny?
