Was out in SoCal again and had a G6 for five days, putting on about 350 miles.
This one had the sunroof (the last one I rented didn't) which made this a lot nicer. It's a great roof and opens huge, but I think it will grow leaks a few years down the road.... a lot of moving parts. Still I love the big opening.
The 200 hp V-6 give it decent low-end poke, but it runs out of steam fairly fast. We pulled onto I-5 and I had it floored in 3rd and at 75 it felt like it was breathing kinda hard. And if you are in manual mode on the tranny and need to accelerate on the highway you HAVE to downshift, as nothing is happening in top gear. Strangely, when you do, at say 70 to 75, there is more poke than I got accelerating through 3rd. Those are times when you really realize what the turbo does for an engine.
The steering is nice and tight, although it could use more road feel. Brakes are good, but I never got to give them a good workout. Ride is OK as well.
Instrumentation is OK, but I find the red dash lights annoying after a while. They wouldn't be good for a couple of my color blind friends. Nice trip computer.
I do like the manual mode on the shifter. I used this except in heavy traffic and it worked well. I've been skeptical about these, but I could possibly live with this instead of a manual.
The seats were better than average. I was surprised, but then the longest run was a couple of hours. Not sure I'd want to be in them all day, or even for a 6 hour run.
Outward visibility was only fair. The G6 has some blind spots that I was mostly able to eliminate with the mirrors, but it needed more than a glance over the right shoulder to change lanes. Some big gaps in the rear quarters.
I think, but am not sure, the G6 shares a platform with the Malibu and 9-3SS. Whatever, the body style and design of the car cries out for it to be a hatchback.
Once I got home I did two 1-2 hour trips this weeeknd in my 9K CSE with four of us on board. I thought about the G6 and decided it was nice enough, but it felt "busy" on the highway. Stable, quiet, reasonably fun to drive, but busy, where the 9K feels composed and relaxed.
Worth renting if you get a chance. Mine was from National.
