No, they don't act like engine brakes. The cylinders are totally unused while MDS is active.
The modern multi-displacement technology is something Mercedes pioneered a few years back. I can't remember what engine it was but my gut tells me it was their modular V6/V8 engines of the late '90s. It's in use on the turbo V12 they currently sell, but I don't know if it's persisted on the smaller, current engines.
Benz calls it ACC - I don't remember what it stands for. Something German, probably. The system that operates on the pushrod V8 is different than the system that works on MBZ OHC V engines (obviously), but the concept is the same, and it works well.
I do find it amusing that nobody really made a big deal about ACC at the time, but MDS is a big deal now. It's kinda like how Saab put pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensioners in 1985 9000s and BMW made a huge stink about it when they put it in the 3-series in 1999. HA!
