I've got a '95 164Q. I bought it five years ago with 85k on it, it's now done about 115k. I don't drive it all that often - with only ~53 of them in the country I take it's care pretty seriously.
I love the car... it's bloody fast in a straight line, reasonably responsive to drive, very comfortable, and gets looks no matter what its company. It's a big heavy FWD machine, though, and turning does not seem to be its forte. You can fix a lot of the handling problems with various bolt-ons, but at 3300lbs I don't expect mine to be exceptionally nimble, and I've kept it stock save the Stebro exhaust and K&N filter installed by the previous owner. It's a blast on mountain roads, but I imagine no fun on an autox course. ;)
Check out the Alfa Digest - good information there. Bottom line is if you're looking, ensure the one you want to purchase has been well looked after and had its scheduled maintenance done - timing belts especially. The earlier (-'92) cars have issues with the HVAC system you probably don't want to tackle, the later cars ('93+) have issues with the HVAC display but no congenital defects in its operation. Both share a 5-speed which isn't as good as Saab's, and the same nasty 4HP18 automatic (so steer clear ;). Other than that, it's just a car, very well built (especially for an Alfa). Some parts are overwhelmingly expensive, most are not. There are several sources in the US, and of course through the magic of ebay and the net in general you can always order oddball parts overseas if you like.
The SOHC cars are very nice (and upgrading to an S-spec engine isn't difficult) but the DOHC cars are amazing, even the base LS version.
