I had speed sensor problems Posted by IanC [Email] (#139) [Profile/Gallery] (more from IanC) on Sun, 11 Sep 2005 18:36:00 In Reply to: OT:Any jeep Cherokee owners with this problem?, Kevin O, Sun, 11 Sep 2005 18:35:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My Cherokee was a 92 and manual, so I can't speak to the ABS light. My car would stall when slowing down in extreme cases, but other times it would lose power momentarily (but not stall) and I would lose the speedo. I had a basic gage package so no tachometer. I think the CEL went on during these attacks.
In my case, it turned out to be the speed sensor in the side of the front transfer case. Easy replacement, but the part cost around $70 and was a dealer only item. I went through three or four of these in the time I had it (10 years and 200K), or about the same number as transmissions. The Aisin manual in the Jeeps was so bad that apparently Peugeot transmissions were a desirable upgrade.
I gave my Jeep to a friend who didn't have far to get to work, and it's still doing very well. Enjoy your car, they're pretty solid trucks that get reasonable mpg (by today's standards).
Good luck,
Ian
